Choosing a Cervélo: which model fits your riding?

Cervélo makes several very different bikes. Here's how to match one to the way you actually ride, with Orange County roads as the example.

Cervélo S5 aero road bike in Five Black at Veloaded Cyclery

Cervélo's current range on cervelo.com covers aero, climbing, all-round, endurance, gravel and triathlon. Lineups change from season to season, so treat this as a guide and check with us for what's available now.

S5: aero race bike

For: riders who want speed on flat and rolling roads, group rides and racing. Think PCH, the Santa Ana River Trail and fast group rides.
Trade-off: aero tubes and deep wheels are less about comfort and more about speed.

R5: lightweight climbing bike

For: riders who love climbing: Santiago Canyon and the Modjeska Grade, Park Ave in Laguna, Carbon Canyon.
Trade-off: it's not as slippery as the S5 on the flats.

Soloist: the all-rounder

For: riders who want one fast road bike that does a bit of everything, with some aero benefit and a versatile position.

Caledonia: endurance road

For: long days, rougher pavement and wider tires, with a more relaxed position. A great choice if comfort over distance matters more than racing.

Áspero: gravel race bike

For: fast gravel and mixed-surface rides, like dirt roads in the foothills and the unpaved trail networks of north and south county.

P5 and the P-series: triathlon and TT

For: triathletes and time-trialists. Integrated storage and aero position; see our triathlon bike service page for what owning one involves.

Three questions to ask yourself

  1. Where do you ride most? Flat coast and river trail (S5, Soloist), canyons (R5), long mixed days (Caledonia), dirt (Áspero), triathlon (P-series).
  2. How flexible are you, and what hurts on long rides? A taller, shorter front end may suit you better than the most aggressive race position.
  3. How wide do you want your tires? Wider tires add comfort and grip; check each frame's clearance.

Size before style

The right size matters more than the right model. Cervélo sizes and geometry vary between models, so compare stack and reach with your current bike. We go through sizing with you before you order; see bike sizing.
